FAQ

What you need to know

• The interaction between the UN and civil society has grown significantly in the past decade, and the unique role of the NGO Coalition, with thousands of organizations now having formal consultative status through ECOSOC accreditation, is a key factor in this growth.

• We are well-placed to raise awareness and engage the public in an informative and educative manner, creating a multiplier effect. Numerous opportunities for engagement and participation at the global and regional levels ensure that the NGO Coalition can carry out these pivotal roles.

• The NGO Coalition is proactive in monitoring and assessing the global societal situation, ensuring that governments appropriately and adequately consider emerging social problems of vast international significance. This approach is central to providing expertise and relevant knowledge and bringing valuable advocacy functions.
• Subcommittees examine global Social Development policies, identify issues that require review, gather and evaluate information, and make policy recommendations to the UN. Over time, they evolved, reflecting changes in society.
  • Like any other nonprofit organization, membership contributions support the workings of the NGO Coalition, for example, the planning of the NGO Common Space, support the planning and implementation of our annual gatherings, and organizing other events and meetings, such as Monthly Meetings. Operational costs for our small team and office. Paying our interns for their essential work.
  • We greatly appreciate those who can support our work to bring international, diverse, and grassroots voices to the UN.
• The regular membership is an organizational membership for ECOSOC-accredited organizations. Before signing up for this membership option, please ensure with your organization that you are the primary contact for your organization’s NGO Coalition membership. There is only one membership per ECOSOC-accredited organization.

• The associate membership is also an organizational membership for organizations not yet accredited with ECOSOC but registered at a country level. Before signing up for this membership option, please ensure with your organization that you are the primary contact for your organization’s NGO Coalition membership. There is only one membership per organization.

• The supporting membership is individual. Any individual who would like to support NGO Coalition, regardless of affiliation with an organization (or lack thereof), can become a member through this membership. This is an individual membership, NOT an organizational membership.
  • It was created to provide the members with insight, information, and advice to help them make well-informed decisions and contribute to efficient operations on social development. The committee can recommend actions to the Executives, but the membership is not obligated to follow the subcommittee's recommendations.

• Fully registered delegates can obtain an invitation letter from the Coalition Secretariat to support their visa application when attending NGO Coalition planned event Only.
  • Members requiring an accreditation letter can request one while completing the online UN indico.org registration plateform2023. To receive an invitation letter, delegates must first register, pay, and submit any required supporting documentation, if applicable. Delegates who did should contact the Registration team at registration@ngocsocd.org.
  • It is essential to note that this invitation letter does not impose any financial obligations on the IAS. All costs associated with participating in the conference are the sole responsibility of the delegate. Furthermore, the invitation letter does not guarantee issuing a visa to any country hosted by the coalition event.
  • If you have submitted a scholarship application, please do not register for the conference separately. If your application is successful, the IAS will contact you and instruct you on registering and receiving an award and invitation letter by early April 2024.
• Members of the same committee or the executives can pass a resolution to remove a person from any voting position on that committee or the coalition at any time. As with all democratic decisions an establishment makes, it must act reasonably. Whether a particular decision is unreasonable will depend on the circumstances.
  • subcommittee membership enables members to develop specialized knowledge of the matters under their jurisdiction. Committees monitor ongoing governmental operations, identify issues suitable for legislative review, gather and evaluate information, and recommend courses of action to the coalition.
• If a motion is referred to a subcommittee, the secretary needs to give the chairman a copy of the motion and the instructions that go with it. The subcommittee chairman should preserve all documents provided to him or her and return them to the secretary in the same condition they were received.
• The Coalition does not provide financial support for meeting participation. The member organization or its representative must cover travel and other expenses.
Members should cherish the opportunity to contribute to genuine social development services and understand the significance of their daily responsibilities. They are informed of the scope of their duties and operating procedures, which summarize those responsibilities.

• Members must complete and submit the registration form before participating in any official activity as NGO Coalition Members.

• Be careful to represent the majority views of your individual. Individual “opinions” to the public and press are discouraged and, if given, should be identified as such.

• Members should represent the corporate interest and not special interest groups.

• Members are uniquely positioned to serve as liaisons between stakeholders and the community. This can help reconcile contradictory viewpoints and build a consensus around common goals and objectives.

• Do your homework and be thorough about your recommendations. View situations under consideration before the meeting to be fully prepared to discuss, evaluate, and act on all matters scheduled for consideration. Conclusions based on careful preparation will strengthen the value of the NGO Coalition’s recommendations.

• Participate in meetings (annual, committee meetings, and others) in continuing advocacy opportunities offered by the NGO Coalition or related affiliate organizations.

• Supportive relationships with the Executive and members are essential for the successful operation of the NGO Coalition. When contacting the Executive on consideration items, the proper channel is through the secretariat via secretariat@ngocsocd.org or a designated subcommittee chair.

• Establish a good working relationship with fellow subcommittee members. Respect individual viewpoints, allow other members time to present their views thoroughly before making comments, be open and honest, welcome new members, and strive to minimize time on issues.

• Admission to the NGO Coalition for Social Development is made without regard to race, color, creed, sexual orientation, gender, or political affiliation. Members are not restricted from participating in social development advocacy activities, political or otherwise, but they should not use or involve their membership in political activities.

• Meeting times for NGO Coalition and the subcommittees are typically held as follows:
